Welcome to the new Medicine section of Suite 101! My name is Michael Woo-Ming and I'm happy to join Suite 101 as a contributing editor. I am currently completing a family practice residency in Arizona and have been hunting for quality medical links since the web got started. These will be recommended web sites that both consumers and medical professionals will enjoy, educate, and (most importantly) TRUST....

Since I've started my residency, I've noticed more and more patients are "net savvy" and are turning towards the internet for information. Unfortunately, inherent in such a vast medium as the internet, there is a substantial amount of information that is misinterpretative, incomplete, and just plain wrong. Hopefully, this column will help wade through the muck and select the best medically oriented sites on the web.

Information is empowering. A dear relative of mine found out as an adult that he was afflicted (albeit mild) genetic disorder that is prevalent but not often discussed. It was difficult to find out much information through his doctor, and he asked me to search through the internet. Well in a few minutes, I had found two web pages, and a national support group, that luckily enough was based in his hometown. In a few nights, he was able to meet with a number of people that he would be able to relate to and cope with his affliction. This is just one of many success stories the internet can provide...
