Forensic Medicine

Forensic medicine forms part of the medical course nearly everywhere in the world, if not everywhere. It may be a module in itself or form part of the pathology module. The depth in which forensic medicine is dealt with may vary, but some broad knowledge about the matter is, I believe, the same everywhere. This month's article allow us to take a look at the various websites on forensic medicine available on the internet. Most of them are about such and such societies, and those with resources of interest to medical students may be less common. As usual, we'll start with the best, or what I consider to be the best anyway.

Forensic Medicine for Medical Students http://www.forensicmed.co.uk/ Here you'll find everything you need to know, or nearly everything. It gives good descriptions of the types of wounds (e.g. abrasions, lacerations, bruises, etc.), has a section on firearms and gunshot wounds, asphyxia and autopsy. There's also information on legal issues and forensic psychiatry.

Forensic Pathology Index http://medlib.med.utah.edu/WebPath/FORHT... This site has mostly tutorials. There're two about forensic pathology: firearms injury and drug abuse pathology. And if you got the stomach for it, then there's a long list of images awaiting you. If you've got an interest for ballistics, there are some pages which might interest you.

Zeno's Forensic Site http://forensic.to/links/pages/Forensic_... Mostly links to other sites here, and not much concerning resources. There's a link to download a little software to determine the time of death at a crime scene. Might be interesting to take a look.

Reddy's Forensic Page http://www.forensicpage.com/ Has some quotes which I find very interesting. And there's a long index with links to pages dealing with many aspects of forensic science, e.g. computer and forensics, image enhancing, forensic odontology, forensic archaeology and anthropology, to name a few less common ones.

Professor Anil Aggrawal's Page of Forensic Jokes, puns and Tidbits http://dranilaggrawal.freeyellow.com/ind... If forensic stuff has got you all depressed, then you may want to have a good laugh, or a least a chuckle, with this page. But Pr. Aggrawal has also a webpage about the more serious aspects of forensic medicine which you may want to have a look at.

Handbook of Forensic Services http://www.fbi.gov/hq/lab/handbook/intro... "The purpose of the Handbook of Forensic Services is to provide guidance and procedures for safe and efficient methods of collecting and preserving evidence and to describe the forensic examinations performed by the FBI Laboratory." This may not be of interest to most of you, at least not right now. But it's good to know that such resources are available in case you're one day working as a forensic pathologist!
