March: Pentagon Disinfo, and more

When I first heard the Pentagon was going to plant lies (propaganda) in the international presses to fool our "enemies" (funny, the US seems to have a lot more enemies than it used to!) through my subscription to the FAIR newsletter (subscribe at "http://www.fair.org/"; FAIR stands for Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting), I thought, "Well, how do you know they're not lying about this one?" Then, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld told the media that "they" weren't going to do that, I thought, "Well, how do you know they're not lying about this one?"

How does one know whether the whole notion of "Pentagon Disinformation" wasn't a ruse to begin with to flush out home dissenters (such as FAIR, for instance)?

Speaking of disinfo, a week and a half ago "Microsoft" sent me an "Internet Security Update" that turned out to be the infamous "W32/GIBE@MM" virus, a worm with a back door trojan built into it so that Outlook Express is corrupted to the viruses "SMTP" engine to e-mail copies of itself all over the world so long as one is online. Microsoft told me it was "a hoax" and wasn't something they sent out. On a scale of one to ten with ten being the highest, this virus ranks about a two...except for the fact that I am tired of deleting a few thousand bounced-back e-mails from the likes of "mailer-deamon@yahoo.com" and the rest. I am waiting to hear from Microsoft whether or not I have to delete my Outlook Express and use Netscape Messenger.

If you join the WorkForWriters e-group at "http://www.yahoo.com" (you must have a Yahoo ID to join a group), you may not find much info about writing jobs, but you will find lots of info about persecution of journalists in places like Zimbabwe, coutesy of member Georges Lessard, a (French-speaking) Canadian, so far as I can tell. Other issues it deals with is media bias from the corporate giants and journalism awards, grants, internships and contests.

The next iisue of this column will be sometime in April. Stay tuned!
