Media self-regulation? Hah! You'll never see it. Not in the established mainstream media, not in the alternative or Internet media, not in book publishing, music, arts--you'll never see self regulation by any owner of any media organ, no matter how big nor how small. And those who call for it are spitting into the wind blowing in their faces.
Here's why:
The folks who own the various media organs also own the regulatory agencies, if not in fact then in reality, as they who control the media tend to control the regulatory agencies; for instance, the organ that puts out movie and TV ratings. Now why would the media control the organs that, in a quasi-sense, legislate morality? Because maybe they just want to mollify those who wish for the garbage morality in the viewing media to give way to something more wholesome, without having to actually do it? You see, the problem with legislating morality is that who gets to say what's moral? So what happens is, the media moguls of all stripes, to appease, say, the Christian Coalition or Republican Mothers or whatever, put out these ratings so that parents can (ostensibly) regulate what their kids watch. Another problem is relativity--what was immoral ten years ago is considered "family entertainment" today (!!) I kid you not!
Just think--Tipper Gore, who wanted lables on albums specifying which ones she thought were "immoral", has a husband running for president in the footsteps of the most immoral president in US history. Just how "moral" do you think these folks are? (And don't give me that "well they picked the God-fearing Leiberman for Veep. You need to go to "http://www.jewishworldreview.com" for a clue as to what some Jews think of his "God-fearingness".
But you won't see the alternatives regulating themselves, either--and these are the guys who want us to believe that they'll "tell the story" where, say, the "http://www.nytimes.com" won't. One gets the opinion that they think they are, being such "truth-tellers" and all, above this kind of thing. But remember this--they too have an agenda (one that might even sound good on the surface, but what they really seek is to replace the "old media" and become the "old media" themselves!).
So, while you might think organs like "http://www.worldnetdaily.com" (on the right) or "http://www.counterpunch.com" (on the left) are "letting it all hang out" with the truth, think about the fact that so few are checking up on them as well as they rake the NY Times et.al. over the coals.
