Writing on-line, getting paid: A fun media issue!© 2000 by Deborah Lagarde. Comments? E-mail: "mailto:dlagarde@suite101.com" This would be the most natural topic for me to write about here at Media Issues since that is precisely what I am doing now! Writing on-line, and getting paid to do it. And, if truth be told, Suite101.com is one of the better site for this since they pay consistently--that is, they are an Internet start-up with a sound financial base. Others aren't so well described! You might want to try some of these other sites out: Bella Online at "http://www.bellaonline.com/" is the "voice of women on the web" and features articles and e-commerce under specific topics written by the various hosts. Check out my site Eating Disorders Host site at: "http://www.bellaonline.com/health/eating..." to see what one does to host a site and skip around to some others. There is a host stipend; however, when one is paid depends on how much ad revenue is being brought in. We Pick at "http://www.wepick.com/" wants writers in specific teams to write for compilation purposes very short (75 word type) reviews of sites under the team category, and you get paid $100 per month for ten accepted articles. Catch: You must have a Windows-based PC; Mac users (such as myself) can't access their submission engine. Brief Me at "http://www.briefme.com/" is like We Pick except they don't pay as well and articles (reviews of articles, actually, in specific topic categories) are sent out each week as part of an e-zine format via e-mail. Again, articles must be accepted for publication before payment is made. If you can write (and enjoy writing) speeches, Speech Writers at http://www.speech-writers.com/" may be for you! This Irish company buys speech sets containing any number of speeches that can be for occassions and three to five minutes in length. Pay varies, depending on how well the speech set sells. Themestream at "http://www.themestream.com/" wants writers of any kind, including fiction, to submit stories and articles of any kind in literally hundreds of categories into their template, and you get 10 cents per click per article. Criticism: many articles and stories do not appear to be written by pros; they are full of spelling and grammar errors. This site seems to be for the wanna-be writer as much as for the professional. But if your column or story set is popular you can make a decent bit of money here. Catch: You won't get paid until you have a total of 250 clicks, or $25 in income.
