US Government Does Payola? For Publication Friday, January 21, 2000. © 2000 by Deborah Lagarde. Comments? E-mail: "mailto:dlagarde@suite101.com" Hey, all you rock 'n roll fans, remember back in the late 50s when the US government exposed the so-called record company-radio station payola scheme? That was when the record companies were caught paying large sums to Radio Stations and such as Dick Clark's American Bandstand in order to get these outlets to play their songs and to influence radio station playlists? Well, Alan Freed and Murray the K, eat your hearts out. Last week, "http://www.salon.com" published a scathing expose by Daniel Forbes on how the US government Cabinet Drug Czar has been paying off six of Americas largest TV networks, including Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC, in order to have the networks change scripts in certain polular TV shows to reflect an anti-drug message, and the networks have willingly done this for the big bucks--and to free up mandatory anti-drug advertizing spots that they can now sell to paying advertizers. Let me repeat this in English--the US government is paying TV networks to change their show scripts to US government liking, allowing the govt. to oversee script changes! Now what is the difference between this and what record companies did in the fifties? Further, does this mean we now have government-funded TV programming reponsible only to the government, as in government-owned TV, as with Britain, Canada and just about everywhere else? Does this mean that now the US government can imbue whatever politically correct line it wants into any TV/radio/internet show it wants under threat of loss of funding/profit or shut down? Imagine this--a TV show won't change its script to reflect the politically correct notion that fundamentalist Christians are all "hate criminals". (Okay, that does seem a bit strong, but that is how Clinton and Reno see fundamentalist Christians--and I don't mean those white supremist Identity folks either. I mean Bible-believing Christians of any stripe.) And, because of this refusal to allow the government to dictate to them, the FCC tells them they are now off the air? I mean, come on folks, just how much nonsense to we have to allow from Clinton and company before we can honestly say we live in Russia???? Why do I now praise her? Because she has done what must have been a very courageous thing--she has now accepted Christ. I mean, accepting Christ as your personal savior is a brave thing--in these days when Christians are being bashed left and right by entertainers like George Michael, media moguls like Ted Turner (who said Christians are losers--does he feel that way now?), and presidents like Clinton. But for one of "them" to turn it around and do it? Well, that just means there really IS hope for this world! Read about her conversion in "http://www.worldnetdaily.com" by searching their archives under Jane Fonda.
