Media on Schiavo case: expediency, not "liberal bias"

© Deborah Lagarde

By now we all know that the "liberal-biased" media is taking husband Michael Schiavo's side in the Terry Schindler-Schiavo news fest. That is because the media, with it's "liberal" bias, will always take the utilitarian side of the issue and denounce the "only God has the right to take life" stance. Because, you see, it's "liberal" (and to prove it, Schiavo has the ACLU on his side!). Now, the media aren't so crass as to say, "Terry should be starved to death because she'll never get better, so Michael should be able to get on ith his life (meaning, marry the woman he's already had a kid with and is having another one soon)." That would actually be too reasonable to say if it was true, which it isn't, because if her husband, also her guardian, would lay out the money for better therapy, she might be living something close to a normal life now. But what the press says is that Terry should be starved to death because she's a "vegeable". The Schindler family, who claims the verboten "only God has the right to take life" line, is naturally being given short-shrift by the media, which has a natural bias against anything politically incorrect. Because it's "liberal"? No. Because it's expedient, and because "the media" is impersonal while underpinning a collective psyche.

The New York Times and most other mainstream press organs--WorldNetDaily, to their credit, is one of the few who tell the truth on this-- refuse to report that Terry Schiavo is not only not a vegetable, but should be living more of a normal life save that her "guardian" husband won't pay for her therapy. But why should he, since he's living with another woman, has given her children, and can't wait to starve Terry to death? Shame on the media for stoking the flames of ending Terry's right to life.

Nude photos of US Imperialism's poster girl? In the hands of a pornographer, not to mention governor-of-California wannabe? Just when will Larry Flynt release those shots of Jessie babe "frollicking with the boys" prior to deployment? Before or after the neo-cons are run out of the US on a rail, hopefully with spikes sticking out? Read the full story here.

Turse, a Columbia U grad student writing his dissertation on American war crimes in Vietnam, claims that the Toledo Blade's expose of Tiger Force's 1967 atrocities are only the tip of the iceberg, listing several more willful military slaughters of unarmed civilians. This blurb follows up October's Media Issues column on the Blade's exemplary journalism job.
