Speedy division

We have the answer 2. We note it down in the answer. In our mind we find out '2 times 12', which equals 24. Therefore, we subtract 2 from 2, getting 0. We need not consider this in our further calculations.

Since 4 of '2 times 12' remains to be treated, we go to the next digit in the dividend. This is 9. We then subtract 4 from 9, getting the remainder 5. There are no more digits in the dividend to be treated. Hence we stop division. Thus far we have 32 in the quotient (or answer) and 5 in the remainder.

Let us check correctness of the answer we obtained. 32 times 12 give 384. 384 and 5 together make 389, which the dividend we started with. Thus, our answer is correct!

Try recording the division above doing your mental work in mind and see how you can manage division in one step.
