Downloading Math Games

School's out for the summer. At least, it will be shortly. If you're school-aged, it's time to sleep in, watch television, play outside, and generally "relax, refresh, and rejuvenate" from that long nine months of school. For educators, it's also a time to relax and refresh, but in the back of our mind is this lingering thought. How much time will I have to spend reviewing what those children should have already learned. The "review" process that math educators go through in the fall can last from one week to two months, depending on the type of class taught and the quality of the students in the class. I think the ideal solution would be year-round schooling, already in place in several districts throughout the country. However, since most of us are stuck in that traditional teaching year, we can't use that to help us out.

Working within the system we have involves a little bit of forethought, and a lot of creativity. One of the easiest ways to make sure your students don't "forget" their math skills during the summer months is to have them practice using those skills. With the exploding popularity of the internet, it is natural to use that as a tool to get kids involved and engage their math skills while they play on the computer. There are many different educational software programs available that focus on mathematics skills. Most of these are free, and readily available at the larger download sites:

At each of these sites, you can search for games, puzzles, and other educational tools to keep your student's math skills active during the summer months. These games are free, and most are small enough that you can distribute them on diskette for your student's to use on their home computers.

This game has you helping tiny tadpoles grow to be big frogs by answering algebraic equations. Fun for all students, but geared toward upper middle and early high school students. This download is a .zip file, which means you will need a file compression utility which allows you to "unzip" files. It should take less than 5 minutes to download and easily installed. Once it is installed, you can play the game. It takes a minute or two to get used to the format, but there are directions, and there are several different types of equations to choose from.
