It's May, the weather is getting nicer, the grass is greener, the seniors in our classes think they are finished. It is also the time to start thinking about summer, and what changes you want to make for the fall. One of the biggest changes you can make is in how you "do" your grades. You can continue, as you have for years, to use the standard green grade book, and spend hours upon hours figuring student grades at the end of quarters, semesters, and academic years. Or, you can take that leap of faith, and get an electronic grade book! There are many forms of electronic grade books available. Some teachers simply create their own in a Spreadsheet program such as Microsoft's Excel or Works, or Lotus' 1-2-3. Others would prefer to have some direction in their grade charting. Below, we'll take a look at some of the available electronic grade books.
For the PC Check 98 Gradebook from Calico Software http://www.calicoed.com/demo.html Check 97 Gradebook is a grade book program for grade school teachers to college instructors. The main display of each grade book is divided into two sections: a tree view for fast access to student information and scores and a tabbed-page view for easy viewing of ledger output. The program also features weighted grades, bell curve adjustments, attendance tracking, and support for an unlimited number of grades and students. The demonstration copy is 1.8MB, and will take approximately 10 minutes with a 28.8kbps modem. The registered version of Check 98 Gradebook is $59.99, and a 50 machine school site license is $1,000. ClassRoom Windows from LaserPoint Software http://www.laserpoint.com/mswin/crw/crw.... ClassRoom Windows is designed to help teachers plan daily activities and keep track of grades. It's a sophisticated tool to help elementary through graduate school instructors manage their class records and compute grades. In the program, you can create your class (or subject) files; edit your class roster, including ID, comments and home-contact information; enter and edit grades and attendance; view and print students' records in many different and useful ways; compute and print student averages and final grades by using many options supplied by the program; and view and print statistics. Included within the freeware package is a 30-day evaluation of ClassRoom Window's Pro edition. This edition, among other things, makes it possible to enter and append student information from a variety of text files, as well as save to a text file; transfer names automatically from an existing file to a new file; open more than one file at a time; set up various printer options; view and print color graphs of student performance; produce a seating chart; and use a built-in word processor/mail merge to communicate with parents. This freeware is a whopping 4.1MB in size, and will take at least 20 minutes to download with a 28.8kbps modem. Go To Page: 1 2
