The Mascot Commandments-Part 3 of Character BuildingJust as there are rules and regulations for every other sport, so are there for the art of mascotting. There's no written book, however, the following commandments have developed through years and years of mascots and their experiences. The following (Do's and Don'ts) are taken and adapted from UCA's mascot camps. Although they may seen very basic, do not underestimate their importance. Your success as a professional mascot depends on these very guidelines! " The Do's"
Work with the cheerleaders and the band as much as possible! The band can play along with your skits and the cheerleaders can liven them up. Attend cheerleaders' practices to create and maintain a harmonious environment. When in costume, always stay in character. Think of how upset young children would get if they saw Santa as just a mall employee...Uggh! Use tact when imitating others. Make a special effort not to offend anyone, including the referees of umps! Always remember that you are representing your school or team! Be sure to uphold a positive image at all times. Keep fit and stay healthy. Take aerobic classes to build your stamina. Chug plenty of water during performances and make sure to eat foods high in carbos so to keep up your energy level! Exaggeration is the name of the game. Remember that you are larger than life! Practice caution at all times to ensure your safety and that of others. The old idiom remains true--practice does make perfect. Practice whenever you have the time, and make the mirror your best friend.
Do not allow others to use your mascot costume. It is a privilege to wear it--do not abuse it. There is no place for lewd, rude or obscene gestures. Again, you represent your team, school, and/or community. No one should see a mascot change from street clothes to the mascot costume and vice versa! Take care to change in private and always carry your costume covered.
Putting together the info contained in the past three articles dedicated to character building will surely help out any novice or refresh all you veterans out there. Good luck and may you be the best mascot you can possible be.
