Real life continues with my only attempt at watching reality TV, so in this posting you'll get all the no holds barred mayhem of both week 5 and week 6 of Ultimate Fighter 2. In other news, the owners of the Suite 101 portal now require me to list the searchable terms that let people find this article and use them right away in the first paragraph. I think it's a stupid policy, but here goes: "mixed martial arts", "no holds barred", wrestling, fighting, television, TV, fight, match, grappling, boxing, kickboxing, "reality television", "reality TV."
Now onto the good stuff: Before we do anything, we have an inspiring fighter update. Melvin, a New Orleans-based fighter who was eliminated earlier this season, has been busy doing something far more worthwhile: saving lives. Here's the story. Though he didn't come across very favorably to me in the world of reality television, he's proved himself as a person. More, he's proved that martial artists and mixed martial arts fighters in particular are not just brainless, heartless thugs. In week 4 of Ultimate Fighter, we saw Coach Hughes continue his taunting of Jorge. I don't know if he has a strategy in mind, but it sure looks like it'd be fun to taunt Jorge -- and Jorge can't wait to fight ... anyone. If it was allowed, Jorge would probably want a good match with Matt. As it is, I'm surprised Jorge didn't take to the furniture with a vengeance. Matt also has tons of fun taunting Team Franklin over yet another Blue Team challenge win, even though it's a silly one -- the goal is to strip the socks off the opposing team. We're told this is a wrestling exercise. I can see some value, but it looks a bit silly to me. At any rate, Matt's team wins fairly easily, and though I'm not all that sure tickling is a valid NHB fighting technique, it works fine in the challenge. This means Team Hughes gets to dictate the heavyweight matchup for the week 5 elimination fight. Matt reveals that his heavyweights are all banged up with bum knees and shoulders -- the bane of all athletes, and grapplers especially. Tom, in the end, is chosen to fight Rashad. Tom has a bad knee, which limits his mobility and explosiveness, both in terms his ability to trade strikes and to shoot in for takedowns. So, it is decided that Tom will try to draw Rashad into attacking, and then to put him against the octagon fence to limit Rashad's mobility as well.
