Prognostication...What is it all about?

© Stuart Bourhill

Have you ever been to visit a fortune teller? Had your palm read? Are you so bold as to predict the future? If not, you should be!

The reason for "testing" yourself by trying to predict the future is not become famous like Faith Popcorn or Charles Handy; rather it is about developing your intuition, being able to trust yourself, and refining your analytical abilities. For example, you may want to pick your own "Top 10" stock portfolio based on your research and analysis of the suggestions of others. You can easily set up your own "portfolio" and imagine that you are running the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This may not bring you a great deal of money today, but it will improve your awareness, knowledge, and understanding of the market - something not wasted, at least if you are shooting for Freedom 55 (or 45).

Dictionary.com defines "prognosticate" as, "To predict according to present indications or signs." Now there are some things that I would not recommend like: The Weather, Alan Greenspan's Temperature, and Enron's Fallout. However, what about simple things, like how your children or "significant" other will react in certain situations; like how your co-workers or customers will react to certain behaviors. Guys have been involved in predicting the outcome of sports events ever since the colliseum was constructed and gladiators ruled. (just ask the folks in Las Vegas).

Sure it is fun to "bet on" sports events, but I suggest that you use your innate prognostication skills on deeper, more meaningful events. The good thing is that you can choose to proclaim these predictions, or just keep them in your black book, or better yet, just let the good ones out...:-).

Seriously, get your brain engaged and make your list of 10 predictions for a specific timeframe, this quarter, this year, (yes, try to contain them to 12 months or less - its more fun tracking these). Get your own powers of intuition engaged - I promise that you don't need to buy a crystal ball or sit in a dark room behind a curtain of jingling beads.

Be Bold - Go Where You Have Not Gone Before!
