Mar 1, 2000
Alfred James "Sonny" Pacino was born on April 25, 1940, in East Harlem, New York. His father was Salvatore Pacino, an insurance salesman, and his mother was Rose Pacino. They divorced when Al was 2 years old.
Al attended the High School of the Performing Arts in New York, but dropped out. He studied acting at the Actors Studio and the Herbert Berghof Studio, both in New York City.
Though he is unmarried, he has been romantically linked to many women, including Annie Prager, Jill Clayburn, Beverly D'Angelo, Lyndall Hobbs, Diane Keaton, Penelope Ann Miller, Kathleen Quinlan, Jan Tarrant, and Tuesday Weld. He has one daughter, Julie Marie, with Jan Tarrant.
In January 1961, Pacino was charged by police with carrying a concealed weapon. Legend has it, he got out of it by telling the police he was doing an acting exercise. He was known for his three-day alcohol binges until he joined AA. He also ended 40-a-day smoking habit in 1994 to protect his voice.
