Al Pacino Takes The Stage In "Hughie"

is too lost in his own world to care what the clerk is saying. But he soon lights up at the chance to dazzle the guy with wild tales about Rothstein and gambling. They end up playing craps the way Eerie had with the old Hughie (only with Erie's money, so the clerk can't lose any real money). Eerie has finally found his new Hughie and his old illusions.

One surprising aspect of the play was that it is much funnier on stage than on the page. For instance toward the end of the play after Eerie has been talking about gambling for 45 minutes the clerk says, "you're a gambler, right?" Pacino stares at the guy like he's an idiot, getting the biggest laugh of the night.

Pacino's performance reminded me of "Lefty" in "Donnie Brasco". Both men were moving toward the end of their lives, sad and vulnerable even though they are supposed to be a tough guys.

On a personal note I was able to get both their autographs after the play. They were both very gracious to their fans. If you ever get the chance to see this play in person I highly recommend it!
