Ray Liotta Part Two

Ray is a fan too. His idols were Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese. "I had no idea what it would be like [to be a movie actor] . I would read all the articles about actors - any interview that came out. But you never know, reading those things, how much is what they say or how much is the person who interprets it." GQ November 1991

The success of Goodfellas, and his ability to hold his own with De Niro and Joe Pesci, earned Ray a lot of respect in Hollywood, but didn't make him the movie star many thought it would. He didn't take advantage of the publicity from it, building his own profile. "Basically, for Goodfellas, I didn't do any publicity until well after so I kind of let things slide for a while. It was where I was at the time. All I wanted to do was act and not get too caught up in things. But, then you realize what this business is about and how it works and so to me, the smartest thing after Goodfellas was not maybe the smartest career choice..." His next film Article 99 was a M.A.S.H.-like black comedy about a heart surgeon coping with the terrible conditions at the V.A. It was based on actual incidents where surgeons stole supplies and operated on patients illegally to save their lives. "The whole crux of this is these are people we ask to make our country great and protect us. ... These guys are discarded when they come back. That's not right." USA Today

It gave him a chance to show his comic timing and have a little romance too. He was in a position now to have a say in his love interest in the film, and requested "no bimbos". Kathy Baker was cast.

Though the film was well done, it was a small movie that didn't make much of a splash. "To do Article 99 was smart, because here I am a heart surgeon who's a good guy and away from that Mafia mode. But it wasn't a high-profile studio movie. It probably would've been better to do something in the vein of Goodfellas just to get a higher profile going." Satellite Entertainment guide April 1996

For me, it's thrilling to meet someone who does
