Remembering September 11

Sep 4, 2002 - © Irene Taylor

September 11, 2001, surely the day that changed America. We certainly all remember where we were when we heard the tragic news, and how we spent that fateful day. And we all are changed - some profoundly, some less so, but all of us have been touched by that day's events in some way.

And now, the one-year anniversary is almost upon us. I now work part time for a local town newspaper, preparing the weekly calendar of events. We work 10 days to two weeks ahead, so the events commemorating September 11 have already come across my desk, jolting me a bit that a whole year could have passed by - so excruciatingly slowly at first and now, it seems, so quickly.

I think of my many teacher friends and how they will be marking this day with their students. It was a devastating event when it happened, and I know many teachers and parents are looking for ways to mark the day with their children. So, even though I may be somewhat late coming to the table, I decided to add my own list of resources to the many that are indeed out there, in the hope that someone may happen upon a link that will provide some useful ways of marking this event.

I will highlight five sites and include a list of others at the end of the article.

A great starting place for teachers looking to mark the events of September 11 is the lesson planning article, September 11: Lessons and Resources for Classroom from Education World. This complete site has articles, resources for teachers and many useful links to help you decide if and how you will recognize this day in American history.

Another helpful site for teachers is the collection of Lesson Plans for September 11, 2001 at Teachervision.com The lessons are clearly marked for grade level and arranged by content. A very useful resource. One more that teachers will find useful is the National Education Association-Health Information Network Remember September 11 LessonPlans page. Links, lesson plans by grade level, and additional resources can be found here.

Parents will find Family Education.com's Remembering 9/11: Resources for Parents and Kids to be a very informative site. This page had support links for parents, suggestions for children's activities, and teaching resources.

The PTA site A National PTA interview with Dominic Cappello, is another useful site for parents. The text of ten talks with kids is included along with many helpful suggestions to help parents answer children's questions about this event.
