Around the world, teachers are honored on World Teachers' Day. The United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated, October 5th as World Teachers' Day. This day was created in 1994 by UNESCO to allow the contributions and achievements of teachers to be recognized worldwide. Deserving Recognition We may know the stories of famous educators like Annie Sullivan, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Maria Montessori, but there are many unsung heroes in the world of educators. Many teachers teach under difficult conditions, some with very few resources, and some even in dangerous places. The following links tell the stories of teachers who have risen above their surroundings to provide the best possible education for their students: Class Acts and Portraits in Courage. And some, like fifth grade teacher John Ford, simply give an extra effort each day that makes the difference between success and failure. Teachers teach because they care. Teaching young people is what they do best. It requires long hours, patience, and care. --Horace Mann And occasionally, a heartfelt "Thank You!!" Copyright 2000 Irene Taylor All rights reserved.
