Learning Opportunities for the New Year

Winter is a great time of year to take advantage of some of the wonderful learning activities that are available online. During these winter months, many of us spend extra hours indoors, so why not put those hours to use learning a new skill or brushing up on some old ones?

Suite University has some wonderful courses for doing just that. Here are a few that you might want to look into. But hurry, the next session begins February 13.

For teachers:

Creating Dynamic Unit Studies: http://www.suite101.com/course.cfm/17333... by Leslie Wilson

From Leslie's course introduction: "You've planned, plotted, and researched an exciting topic. You're all fired up to teach it to your children, but the response is definitely ho-hum bored with school. It's unit studies to the rescue!

Or maybe you're frustrated trying to shoehorn your children into pre-packaged educational material? Break out of the mold by designing your own material tailored to the interests and needs of your family, your class. This course will give your educational toolbox a treasure trove of ideas and resources to produce a runaway hit! This is your production, Director. You've decided your precious children will learn best at your hands. Let's see how many imaginative ways we can devise to empower those hands of yours! Make all the world your stage, your family the players as you direct the production - be it simple or grand. Learn the secrets to setting the stage for spectacular unit studies."

For homeschoolers:

Homeschooling the Unschooling Way http://www.suite101.com/course.cfm/19413... by Sara McGrath

Sara's introduction says, "The unschooling approach to homeschooling is not a new approach to learning. It's the way we learn naturally when left to follow our interests. It's also the way most children learned before modern compulsory schooling. Unschooling is not a method, as you will learn, but a flexible approach for individual families and individual children."

For college students:

Effective College Strategies: Coping as a Freshman http://www.suite101.com/course.cfm/18867... by Christine Buske

In her introduction, Christine says, "Many students drop out of college every year, just because they are so overwhelmed and have no clue where to go when things don't go smoothly right away. This course is meant to prepare you to deal with the roadblocks you will surely face on your way, not just in first year, but in every year. Keep in mind that your first year in college will mark the rest of your life and can make or break your career. How you will grow will determine a lot down the road and is just as important as it is for an athlete to win a world championship in order to make it to the Olympics. If they get the best trainers to get ready, then so should you!"
