Last month's Premium Incentive Show, held at the Jacob Javits Center in New York, provided some interesting ideas and a good look at products that help motivate customers to buy whatever you sell and employees to work more productively.

If you are not familiar with this annual affair, the Premium Incentive Show is a trade event where brand-name and lesser-known exhibitors display the latest in promotional products, anything that motivates consumer sales and employee work habits. Well-known companies such as Sony, Coach, Pizza Nut and American Airlines displayed an assortment of motivational items, along with smaller firms that sell products that are just as rewarding.

One thing was clear - the effects of last year's tragedy are still evident in New York. The energy at the April 2001 show was more positive and upbeat than this year's, but the mood will get better in time. It was great to see a number of gift basket businesses showing their baskets as motivational products.

An event such as this increases both your creativity and idea base to develop a more profitable business. The gift basket displays encouraged me to add new containers and products to my current assortment. That wasn't all. Representatives of companies selling gift certificates spoke with me and shared ingenious ways to incorporate these low-cost prizes into an incentive program.

You can always find a little comedy mixed in with serious business. Exhibitors place bowls filled with giveaway items on their display counters, and attendees are so busy grabbing handfuls of these items that they trip over each other trying to get away before being discovered. What's the point of bringing 50 keychains back to the office?

One item that everyone received was a substantial bottle of scented lotion from Bath & Body Works. Company representatives holding queen-sized shopping bags greeted everyone at the trade show entrance. As they handed us bags, we were told that a certificate and bottle cap were inside each, redeemable for a full bottle of lotion.

The Bath & Body Works' booth was buzzing with activity when I arrived. Before I received the lotion, a representative massaged my hands with the company's aromatherapy cream. Bath & Body Works' strategy to bring attention to their firm should prove to be a boon to their bottom line.

This type of show is held in many parts of the country. Attend if you can. You'll walk out with many promotional ideas to increase your sales.
