With the dawn of a new year and the fast approach of spring now comes the time for retailers and gift professionals to ask themselves "What's Hot, and What's Not for 2005?"

What's Hot? Anything that has to do with healthy living. Although the low-carb craze is slowing down consumers are continuing to strive for a healthy lifestyle. Organic food and products are still a hot commodity, as well as spa and pamper products. Gift basket retailers can continue to look forward to brisk sales in these categories. Simplicity plays a big part in marketing to this group. Simple designs with clean lines, lots of color, and luxurious products are sure to win the hearts of your customers.

Personalization - Personalization is another key word that you will see and hear a lot in 2005. Everyone wants personalized gifts sold by a retailer that's giving them personal service. We all want to feel special and providing gift baskets that are unique in their design and style is one way that gift basket professionals can provide personal service.

Designing gift baskets that use unique out of the ordinary containers is one way that gift basket professionals can provide personal service to their customers. Here's an area of the business where you can really let loose with your creativity. Scour thrift stores, flea markets, and garage sales to find containers of varying sizes, shapes, and colors. Train your eye to look for things that may not necessarily be a container but with a little creativity will make a stunning presentation. These are the things that will make you stand out from the competition.

Personalized gifts are gift items that are unique to a particular customer. Engraved items, imprinted ribbon, and gift items with specific color combinations that reflect the taste of the gift giver as well as the receiver are more ways of providing the personalization that customers will demand in 2005.

Color - Color plays a key role in what's hot in 2005. With the coming of spring we tend to think of pastels and lighter colors. Pastels will still be around but colors for 2005 will be more serene with a little more depth. Think of nature when you think of color for 2005.

Snack Foods - Americans are on the go all the time. We spend a lot of our time in our cars driving to and from work, school, activities, etc. We want our snack foods to be nutritious, full of flavor, and portable; hence the popularity of soups, smoothies, and snacks in re-sealable, portable containers. This trend will continue in 2005 and beyond. Snack baskets and picnic baskets will see growth in the coming months.

Hi, Jowoanna. :-) The line about thinking "nature" when planning colors is a very good tip. Especially when it ties in with the season and the healthier lifestyle. Somehow I wouldn't have connected ...
