Branding Your Business

Webster's has several definitions of the word "brand" in the dictionary. Here are two of them: a class of goods identified by name as the product of a single firm or manufacturer. Another definition is: a mark made by burning with a hot iron to attest manufacture, or quality, or to designate ownership.

Although you're not going to brand something or someone with a hot iron to distinguish yourself from your competitors, what are you doing to make your mark? There are several different ways you can "brand" your business. Let's examine a few.

Unique containers are one way to brand your business. Containers come in all different colors, shapes, and sizes. There are the standard wicker baskets, gift bags and boxes, and even trays made of various materials.

Thrift stores, antique shops, flea markets, yard sales, and estate sales are all places that lend themselves to finding one-of-a-kind pieces that can be used as a container for a gift basket. By using unique, unusual containers, not only are you distinguishing yourself from the competition but you get the added bonus of having the container become a part of the gift itself.

Theme Baskets are another way to brand your business. Most baskets start with a theme and then you design from there. If you become known as a specialist in a certain themed area, then who do you think people are going to call (and refer) when they are looking for that particular themed basket, party favor, or gift item?

Be careful, though, when you get into themed baskets. You want to be known as a specialist in a certain area; however, you don't want customers to exclude you when it comes to other areas of the gifting business. It would be a good idea to have gift items from the same product line available to sell in addition to the gift basket. If you don't already subscribe, order a subscription to Giftware News. Branding by color or color combinations. When you hear that someone received a piece of jewelry in a little blue box, who do you think of? Tiffany's! If you see a white bag with a red bullseye on it do you automaticaly know what store it came from? Target, of course. These stores all used color as a means of branding themselves.
