MLS Players Head Overseas

In an effort to continue improving their own play, and the level of play in MLS, several players are heading overseas to train with top European clubs.

The list of players has continued to grow through contacts that have been developed over the years. Simon Elliott from the LA Galaxy will be heading to England tomorrow to begin training with the legendary Manchester United. Elliot is scheduled to be at Old Trafford for a one month period. "I’m going there to improve on my game and I will quickly learn what areas I need to concentrate on,” said Elliott. “I expect the sessions to be quick and physical with a lot of first-time soccer and I’m looking forward to matching myself with some of the best players in the world."

Chicago Fire teammates, Zach Thornton and Demarcus Beasley are already training in Europe, but in different countries. Thornton is training with Brad Friedel and the Blackburn Rovers in the English Premier league. Beasley is training with Brescia in the Italian Serie A.

The Tampa Bay Mutiny have three players that are training in England. Devin Barclay is training with Tottenham Hotspur along with national team keeper, Kasey Keller. Gus Kartes and Ali Curtis are training with Charlton Athletic.

In other news in the league, AEG which is controlled by Denver millionaire Phil Anschutz, purchased the operating rights of the NY Metrostars. With this purchase AEG now owns 5 of the MLS teams. The other teams include the Colorado Rapids, LA Galaxy, Chicago Fire, and DC United.
