2001 Waiver Draft

In a surprise, some big names in MLS were placed on the waiver blocks. In an even bigger surprise none of them were taken.

The biggest names probably came from the Colorado Rapids. My personal take on the team this year is that they made some choices in the middle in order to try to gain some wins, but the did not get a good mix of players. At this point they have to decide what kind of team they are going to have for 2002 and I suppose these waivers are the first step toward that restructuring.

The players that the Rapids let go were Raul Diaz Arce, Paul Bravo, Lance Key, and Geoff Aunger. Diaz Arce has of course been a mainstay of the MLS and Bravo is the current leading regular season scorer for the Rapids.

Other players that were placed on waivers includes: Mark Watson and Micah Cooks from DC United, Mark Semioli and Billy Walsh from the Metrostars, Pete Marino, Ali Ngon and Greg Simmonds from the Fusion, Roland Aguilera, Matt Okoh, Fernando Ortiz Soliz, and Alan Woods from the Revs, Kevin Adams and Mario Longo from the Crew, Miles Joseph and Chris Snitko from the Burn, Scott Cannon, Craig Demmin, Alberto Munoz, and Matthew Nyman from the Mutiny, Tahj Jakins and Brian Johnson from the Wizards, and Dario Brose from the Quakes. The Galaxy and Fire did not waive anyone.

In other news DC United worked their way to a 2-2 tie against Club Deportivo Olimpia from Honduras in a International friendly at RFK stadium. With the aid of guest player Ritchie Williams and some fine work from super-sub Santino Quaranta, the United were able to mount a late, second-half comeback to tie Olimpia. Olimpia scored in the 14th and 70th minute, but United came to life in the 74th minute when Santino Quaranta found the back post. Finally, in the 89th minute Mark Lisi launched a free kick that veered off the wall and into the net.

It going to be interesting to see who will be coming into the league this year off of the recruiting trips that the MLS teams have started already.
