The off-season now begins and we have our first statement from a player saying that he is leaving his team.

Petter Villegas has spoken up in the newspapers and has said that he has played his last match in a Metrostars jersey. This does not necessarily mean that he is leaving the MLS.

His main sticking point is that he does not feel that he can give his best in the more defensive role that the Metrostars have placed him in. Head coach Octavio Zambrano has used Villegas in a role that calls for more defensive play and Villegas feels that he needs more offensive work.

For MLS this may not be a bad thing. Remember that it was the Metrostars that helped Clint Mathis blossom into the player he is now. This did not happen until he left LA.

In other news, the MLS Project-40 team will wrap up a three game tour of England tonight with a match against Crewe Alexandria. Project-40 opened the tour against the Manchester United reserves with a 6-0 loss. They followed that match with a game against the Nottingham Forest reserves and showed much better with a 3-1 win.

Look for some off-season loans to be announced soon. These were very successful for MLS last year.
