News, Action, and Playoff Implications from the week of Aug 18


This was an extremely full week so lets get to it.

On the 15th Columbus hosted Dallas and sent them packing with a 3-0 loss. The goals were scored by Brian Maisonneuve, John Wilmar Perez, and Dante Washington. Maisonneuve scored in the 18th minute off a corner kick by Perez. Washington would then score in the 75th minute off another assist by Perez when Perez chipped a ball to Washington who nodded it into the net. The final score would come from Perez himself in stoppage time when he benefitted from a long ball from keeper Tom Presthus.

The Metrostars travelled to DC to face the United and were able to come away with a 2-1 win. The goals were scored by Rodrigo Faria, Mark Chung, and Mark Lisi for United. The Metros opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Faria received a pass from Petter Villegas who had made an excellent run to draw defenders to him. The second goal came in the 41st minute when Faria fed Chung who made a run down the left side and then cut into the box before putting the ball just in the near post. DC pulled one back in the 87th minute when Mark Lisi , who subbed in in the 46th minute, knocked in a loose ball.

Miami travelled to Chicago and rebounded off their recent slump to defeat the Fire at home. The first goal came in the 15th minute when Chris Herderson fed Alex Pineda Chacon in the box. The second goal came from Chicago when Dema Kovalenko headed home a free kick by Reter Nowak in the 32nd minute. The final score of the match came from Diego Serna in the 38th minute when Henderson chipped in a cross that Serna was able to head home to give Miami the 2-1 win.

The final match of the 15th came when LA travelled to Kansas City to face the Wizards. The match was not decided until Ezra Hendrickson scored in overtime. The first goal came in the 12th minute when Danny Califf scored off a freekick by Simon Elliott. The second score came for the Wizards when Onandi Lowe, who subbed on in the 46th minute, buried a freekick in the 57th minute. LA would claim the win in overtime when Hendrickson knocked the ball in off the crossbar.

On Saturday the up and down New England Revolution hosted DC United to a 2-1 loss. Both Revs goals came from Ted Chronopoulos with assists from Andy Williams. The first came in the 9th minute when Williams fired a cross to the top of the box that Chronopoulos one-touched into the net. The second came in the 30th minute when Willaims fed Chronopoulos along the left side of the box who then put the ball in the far side netting. DC would get one back just two minutes later when Stephen Armstrong tapped home a loose ball from a free kick.
