Action and News from the Week of August 11

First to the action from the week. San Jose travelled to New England on Wednesday the 8th and saw Landon Donovan explode for two goals and two assists in a 5-1 blasting of the Revs. Donovan opened the scoring in the 35th minute when he scored off a long ball and a well timed run. He then doubled the score just 4 minutes later when he scored on a penalty kick after Maurico Wright received a red card for blocking a shot with his hand. Cate then got one back for New England in the 44th minute when he stepped up and buried a PK after Manny Lagos fouled Leonel Alvarez in the box. The second half belonged to the Quakes and Donovan earned his first assist when he fed a pass to Junior Agogo while he was still on their side of the field and then the race was on. Agogo out-raced the Revs defense which was now a man down and calmly put the ball in the net. The second Donovan assist came in the 71st minute when the 19 year old fed a pass to Manny Lagos near the top of the box which Lagos promptly put away. Agogo gave the Quakes the 5-1 win with a late goal in the 80th minute.

New England's outlook for post-season play did not improve any when they next hosted Miami to Foxboro. New Engalnd started out strong when Matthew Okoh started the scoring in the 6th minute. But Miami was apparently just getting warmed up. Just over 10 minutes later Alex Pineda Chacon volleyed in a shot that came from a long ball by Diego Serna. Another 10 minutes had pasted when Serna again played the role of playmaker when he found Preki near the top of the box. The 38 year old found the top of the net with his left foot. Still in the first half, in the 35th minute Chris Henderson received a pass from Preki which he was able to get into the net. The scoring was finished off in the 68th minute when Serna received a ball from Preki that he was able to just barely poke into the goal.

The revival of US goalscorer Eric Wynalda continued on Saturday when Chicago hosted Tampa Bay. John Maessner surprised Chicago by getting Tampa Bay on the board first when received a cross at the back door. He touched the ball once at the top of the box and then slid the ball just under Zach Thornton to give the Mutiny the 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. But Wynalda would tie it up on a PK that came from Steve Trittschuh took down Jamar Beasley in the penalty area in first half stoppage time. Wynalda would give Chicago the lead when he scored on a header off a free kick by Peter Nowak in the 50th minute. In the 71st minute Jim Curtin sent a long ball up to Peter Nowak who controlled the ball at near full speed, turned and put the ball in the side netting to give Chicago the 3-1 win.
