News and Action from the week of August 5

We had some big blow-outs and some surprise results this weekend and also saw teams coming on strong for the playoffs push, and others slipping ground.

The Chicago Fire suffered their first shutout of the season when they lost to the Columbus Crew by a score of 3-0. The first goal came in the second half in the 65th minute when Jeff Cunningham placed a shot between two defenders and under Zach Thornton. The second came just four minutes later when John Wilmar Perez was able to spin and bury the ball in the net off a deflected shot by Cunningham. The third goal came from Brian Maisonneuve off a cross from Brian McBride.

The second game of the day was a 2-2 tie between Dc and Miami. Miami had to fight back from being 2 down in order to tie the match. Abdul Thompson Conteh had the first two goals of the match. The first came in the 30th minute when he heeled the ball past Nick Rimando off a cross from Brian Kamler. The second came just 3 minutes later when Conteh received the ball from Jaime Moreno and beat Rimando to the right post. But Miami would come back in the second half. In the 55th minute Chris Henderson carried the ball down the left side and crossed into Alex Pineda Chacon who tapped it in to make it 2-1. In the 74th minute Chacon crossed into Diego Serna who nodded home the tying score.

In play on Saturday Colorado hosted Chicago and took an early lead when Marcelo Balboa headed home a cross from Imad Baba in the 7th minute. But Chicago would tie it up in the 40th minute when Jamar Beasley chested down a pass from Eric Wynalda and put a shot past Scott Garlick.

Tampa Bay hosted San Jose and surprised the Earthquakes with a 2-0 victory. Adin Brown, who earned player of the week honors, made 10 saves in the match. The Mutiny began the surprise when Josh Keller scored off a Steve Ralston pass in the 23rd minute. The second goal came in the 35th minute when Danny Pena headed home a shot off a free kick from Mamadou Diallo.

In a surprise offensive output by the Revolution, New England defeated Dallas 5-1. The avalanche started in the 9th minute when William Sunsing worked his way into the Burn penalty area from 35 yards out and put a shot just past Matt Jordan. In the 49th minute, Matt Okoh, who came on for an injured Sunsing in the 40th minute, played the ball to Ted Chronopoulos who slammed a shot home just off the crossbar. Okoh would get one for himself in the 76th minute when he received the ball from Cate and quickly turned and shot on goal. Cate would then get the next goal when he received a pass from Andy Williams and pulled Matt Jordan out of position. The final Rev goal would also come from Chronopoulos when he received a Okoh pass and slipped it past Jordan in the 82th minute. But Dallas got one back in the 86th minute when Ariel Graziani put a cross over to Alecksey Korol who redirected the ball past Jeff Causey.
