Scores and News from the week of June 23

This week saw some players adjusting nicely to new teams, and other finding themselves on new teams, and leaders solidifying their positions.

On Wednesday the 20th New England brought a Massachusetts native home in a trade with Miami. In a trade off of talent for talent and midfielder for defender, New England traded Jay Heaps and a second round pick in the 2003 Major League Soccer SuperDraft from the Miami Fusion in exchange for defender Brian Dunseth and a first round pick in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft.

Heaps would immediately make an impact on the Revs lineup when he was subbed into their match that night against the Rapids. The Rapids came into Foxboro hoping to turn around their struggling season, and they came very close.

In a very entertaining match, Chris Carrieri opened the scoring in the ninth minute by taking a shot from 20 yards out that appeared to be covered by Jeff Causey, but the shot knuckled under him and trickled into the net. This was Carrieri first professional goal. John Spencer followed this up for the Rapids in the 20th minute when he lofted a header over Causey and into the net off a cross from Ross Paule. New England began to turn things around just 6 minutes later when Johnny Torres collected a poor Colorado pass and drove through the defense and poked the ball just past Adin Brown for the goal. Ted Chronopoulos would tie it up in the 71st minute when he neatly placed a shot in the upper right corner. Shaker Asad gave the Revs the lead and what seemed like the win with a header goal off a free kick in the 88th minute. But Paul Bravo would pull the Rapids even and gain them a point when he scored on a header in stoppage time.

If you were a Galaxy fan who decided to scoot out of the game a little early on Saturday figuring it was going to go down tied 0-0, you missed two of the closest scored goals by the same player this year. The Metros travelled to LA to try to find some offense without Clint Mathis (man, how much are we going to miss this guy, get better soon Clint). The match was held scoreless through most of the match by the tough defense of both squads. But in the 87th minute Cobi Jones took a run down the left side of the field and beat several Metro defenders to get into the box. He placed a perfect cross to Luis Hernandez who make a well placed right foot shot to put the ball past Tim Howard. Just one minute later Danny Califf lofted a long ball over Hernandez who beat the offside trap to go one-on-one with Howard. The veteran striker did not miss the opportunity and he buried the shot past Howard to give the Galaxy the 2-0 win.
