Scores and News from the week ending June 3rd

To begin with, there were several games on Wednesday the 30th, but one of the biggest may have been a match in Columbus. The Crew hosted Bayer Leverkusen to the 3rd and final match on the Bayer road tour of the U.S. Leverkusen had previously defeated DC United 4-3 and the A-league Pittsburgh Riverhounds 6-4. The Crew were the last chance for the US pro leagues to show some strength to the Germans and the Crew came through. The final score was 4-3 advantage Columbus. Brian McBride scored two goals in the first half and then John Wilmar Perez and Jeff Cunningham scored in the second. Kudos to the Crew.

In straight MLS action on the 30th the Fusion hosted the United to Miami and sent them back home with a 2-1 loss. But it may not be all bad for DC, it may be that Chris Albright is starting to live up to his potential. Miami scored first off a penalty kick taken by Preki. The direct kick was called when Carey Talley tripped Alex Pineda Chacon in the area. DC came back when Chris Albright took a pass from Marco Etcheverry and then sent a shot of the inside of the post into the back of the net. Miami scored the game winner when Jim Rooney received a pass from Diego Serna just outside the goal box and blasted it into the back of the net.

Also on the 30th the Galaxy travelled to Chicago and ended the Fire's home unbeaten streak at 15 when they downed the Fire 4-3. In a very entertaining match from the start the scoring was opened by Hristo Stoitchkov when he scored in the 12th minute on a penalty kick. Jesse Marsch added to the Fire lead after just three more minutes when he beat two Galaxy defenders and then Galaxy keeper Matt Reis. The Galaxy came storming back when just 4 minutes later Luis Hernandez found his scoring touch to one-time a Brian Mullan pass into the net. Greg Vanney then scored in the 22nd minute on a penalty kick after Cobi Jones was pulled down in the box. The score remained tied until the 52nd minute when Pete Vagenas took a deflected ball at the top of the Fire box and gave the Galaxy the lead. Hernandez' second goal of the season came when Greg Vanney sent a cross into the Mexican striker in the 70th minute who quickly found the net. The Fire came back to within one in the 75th minute when Eric Wynalda scored his second goal of the season, but the Fire could not get any more than that.
