The Action from the Week of May 12

The week got off to a start with a bang when L.A. traveled to Tampa Bay to face the Mutiny. L.A. started things in a hurry when Cobi Jones fed Brian Mullan in the 39th second, yeah I said SECOND, and he put it in the back of the net. Just a few minutes later Sasha Victorine took a pass from Jones and again found the net. But Mamadou Diallo then started on a nearly uninterrupted 4 goal run starting in the 15th minute. Greg Vanney scored on a penalty kick and in stoppage time Brian Mullan scored again to give L.A. a point out of the 4-4 tie.

Mid-week was definitely the time for goals this week as DC trounced the Revs 5-0 in Washington. Abdul Thompson Conteh scored four of the goals while Carrey Talley scored the other.

In Saturday action, the Revs hosted Chicago in only the second home game of the season thus far for New England. In a surprise, the Revs finally earned their first win of the season. New England midfielder, Cate, (pronounced Kah-tay) scored his first MLS goal on a penalty kick in the 36th minute. Peter Nowak scored in the 63rd minute for the Fire off a deflection from a corner kick. The game stayed tied through the rest of the match and went into overtime. Matt Okoh, who had been subbed on in the 63rd minute, found the ball and the top of the Fire penalty box when Wolde Harris was besieged by 2 Fire defenders and Okoh found the back of the net in the 15th second of overtime.

After the result from their last home stand you would have expected DC to be unstoppable, but San Jose found a way. San Jose came into the match having just squeaked out a victory over New England at home. Ian Russell scored first for San Jose to give them the lead in the 36th minute, but just 3 minutes into the second half Eric Denton scored off a feed from Carrey Talley and then Jaime Moreno scored on a penalty kick to give DC the lead. Manny Lagos then scored in the 54th minute to tie the match and finally scored again in stoppage time to give San Jose the win.

In a nationally televised match the top team in the West, L.A., faced the top team in the East, The Metrostars. In a very entertaining match LA could not keep Clint Mathis quiet for very long. In the 53rd minute, Mathis took a free kick that he slightly bent around the wall and off the far goalpost. Petter Villegas then buried the rebound. In the 77th minute, Pedro Alvarez fed Mathis with a wonderful pass near the top of the box and Mathis perfectly placed a low shot just inside the far post to beat L.A. keeper Kevin Hartman and give NY the 2-0 win.
