Action and News from the May 5 Weekend

Boy, a lot sure happened this week and this weekend. In a trade on May 3, Eric Wynalda was sent to the Chicago Fire in a trade for John Wolyniec and a 2002 draft pick. The trade immediately paid off for the Fire when Wynalda scored the second goal in a 2-0 Fire victory over the Mutiny. Dema Kovalenko scored the first goal and the assist on Wynalda's goal.

On May 2, Clint Mathis took a large step toward setting himself up as one of the premier U.S. players. When the Metros hosted the defending champs, the Kansas City Wizards, most expected a low scoring match. Mathis had other thoughts as the national team member went on to register the first hat-trick of the 2001 season and lead the Metros to a 4-1 thumping of the Wizards. The other Metros goal was scored by Adolfo Valencia and the Wizards lone goal was scored by former Metrostars midfielder Kerry Zavagnin.

In a surprise match result from Columbus, the 1-1-1 Crew held the 4-1 Miami Fusion to a 0-0 draw on the Columbus turf. The match saw the return of Brian McBride to the Crew lineup.

The Metros then had their second home match of the week when they hosted the DC United and quickly found themselves behind. Jaime Moreno scored just before halftime and then again just after the second half started. But the Metros finally started to find the net in the last 11 minutes of the match when Mathis scored off a rebounding ball from a free kick. First year player, Rodrigo Faria scored the second goal off a feed from Alex Comas. The final goal, that gave the Metros the 3-2 win came from Petter Villegas after his own cross had bounced around the United box a couple of times.

In a back and forth match Colorado finally earned their first win of the season in Dallas. Dallas had some strong changes in the first half but Coloardo keeper, Adin Brown, kept the net empty. In the 76th minute, Ted Eck of Dallas received a red card and Colorado was given a man advantage. Paul Bravo, who has always given the Burn trouble, came on in the 73rd minute and ended up giving the Rapids the hard fought win in the 87th minute.

In a great result for San Jose, the Earthquakes defeated the New England Revolution at home with a score of 3-2. The smaller San Jose field made it difficult for players to find much room to work but everyone quickly adjusted. San Jose went up 3-0 starting in the 28th minute with a great shot by Troy Dayak off a free kick by Jeff Agoos. In the 72nd minute, a cross was sent into the Revs box by Ian Russell and the Revs keeper, Jurgen Sommer, came out to make the grab, but in some sort of miscommunication, he collided with his own defender and dropped the ball at the feet of Dwayne DeRosario who poked it into the back of the net. The third Quakes goal came when Zak Ibsen demonstrated why it is important to be able to use both of your feet on the ball. Ronald Cerritos made a beautiful pass to Ibsen who took one shot with his right foot that rebounded off Sommer. Ibsen then buried his second shot with his left foot.
