In a positive sign for scouting and drafting, the Tampa Bay Mutiny's first round SuperDraft pick Craig Demmin, a defender, finished an errant ball in the opponents' box from a corner kick in the 23rd minute as the Mutiny held on to defeat the Premier Development League Cocoa Expos 1-0 in Cocoa, Fla., on Saturday night in an exhibition match.
New Miami Fusion midfielder, Preki, recorded a goal and two assists to spark the Fusion's 3-1 win over a squad of all-stars from the El Nuevo Herald Copa Latina tournament in the Miami Friendship Classic on Sunday evening at Ted Hendricks Stadium in Hialeah. The game also marked the Fusion debut of midfielder Ian Bishop, acquired on Thursday from Manchester City of the English Premiership.
Also on Saturday the 10th, in what may be the sign of a great turnaround, the San Jose Earthquakes convincingly defeated the defending D3 Pro League Western Conference Champion Chico Rooks 7-1 today at West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif.
On the 13th, D.C. United acquired former San Jose defensive midfielder Travis Mulraine off waivers. Mulraine played last season, his first in MLS, primarily as a defensive midfielder with the San Jose Earthquakes. The 23-year-old native of Trinidad & Tobago made 15 appearances for the Quakes, starting seven matches and collecting one assist. Mulraine spent this off-season on loan to Joe Public, where he spent the previous three years prior to joining MLS in 2000. Mulraine also has international experience, earning eight caps for Trinidad & Tobago's senior national team and serving as captain of his country's Olympic team during qualifying for the Sydney Games.
Also on the 13th, Curt Johnson, General Manager for Kansas City Wizards, announced the trade for former U.S. National Team defender/midfielder Mike Burns, from the San Jose Earthquakes for conditional draft picks in 2002. Burns, 30, has made 75 appearances with the U.S. National Team, from 1992-1998, including two starts (one in the midfield and one in the back) in the 1998 World Cup in France. He also played for Wizards Head Coach Bob Gansler with the U.S. U-20 National Team, which finished fourth in the World in 1989.
