the draft. Zavagnin, who the Wizards selected in the 3rd round last year, played for the MetroStars in 1997 and 1998 and then the 1999 season with the Lehigh Valley Steam. Last season, Zavagnin started 31 of 32 games (missed one game due to caution points suspension) and started all seven post-season games en route to the MLS Cup. Gregor played in 10 games for the Columbus Crew in 1998, after being drafted in the 2nd round (21st overall) from the University of Portland, where he was teammates with Wizards forward Chris Brown. With the Crew, Gregor, 25, tallied two assists, one on the 1998 MasterCard Goal of the Year in which Brian McBride took Gregor's pass and hit a sidewinding, acrobatic volley.

In the 3rd round, Kansas City chose forward Ben Stafford from Wake Forest with the 35th pick. Stafford, 22, completed his four-year career as the second all-time leading scorer in school history with 91 points (36 goals, 16 of which were game-winners, and 19 assists). Last season, Stafford was the second leading goal scorer in the country with 16. He also scored a goal and had an assist in the East squad's 4-0 win over the West on Sunday's Umbro Select All-Star game in Florida.

The Wizards also held the 36th pick, but traded it to D.C. United (who in turn traded it to the Colorado Rapids) for a player to be named soon.

In the 4th round, the Wizards selected defender Pablo Webster with the 48th pick. Webster, 21, played four years with Clemson and led his team in assists as a senior with 12.

In the 5th round, the Wizards held two selections, the 59th and 60th picks. With the 59th selection, the Wizards selected midfielder/forward Narciso Fernandes. Fernandes, who stands at 6-3 and 195 pounds (same as Matt McKeon), is a 22-year old player who earned All-Big Ten honors at University of Wisconsin. The Wizards then traded the 60th pick to Tampa Bay for its pick in the 2002 draft.

Finally, Kansas City held the last pick in the draft, 6th round and 72nd overall, and chose goalkeeper Matthew Cross. Cross, 21, finished his four-year career at Brown with 43 wins and just 16 losses and led his team to four NCAA Tournament appearances.
