Russell finished his career at Duke University with 12 goals and 21 assists for 45 points. In 2000, Russell finished his collegiate career with season highs in goals (7) and assists (12), including being named Second Team All-American by SoccerTimes.com and CollegeSoccer.com after his senior season.

"I know we are taking a little bit of a chance drafting Robby Russell, but in my estimation he was the best player here hands down," stated Schmid. "If he had signed an MLS contract in advance he would have gone in the top two to three picks in the Draft. We are going to be taking a little bit of a risk but the upside is huge."

"I spoke with Sigi about the potential for exposure in Europe at the World Club Championship and about players that he has helped to go overseas and these are all points in L.A.'s favor," said Russell, who is not currently signed by MLS. "I am planning to come out to Los Angeles this week and that will definitely help me to make a decision."

Midfielder Brent Rahim was the Galaxy's the 45th overall pick (fourth round) from the 2000 NCAA National Champions University of Connecticut. The 5-7, 160 pound Rahim was named to Trinidad and Tobago's 32-man player roster for the final round of World Cup Qualifying in 2001 after participating in the first round of qualifying in 2000. A member of the U-23 Trinidad National Team, Rahim participated in the 1999 U-23 Pan America Games in Canada. He was a two-time finalist for the Herman Trophy (1999 and 2000), Big East Midfielder of the Year (2000) and the 1999 Missouri Athletic Club player of the Year. "We were pleasantly surprised that he was still on the board," said Schmid, "He is a play making midfielder who has a vast amount of experience. I look for him to help us down the line as some one who could possibly one day fill the shoes of Mauricio Cienfuegos."

A native of Chino Hills, California, Alex Bengard led Cal State Dominguez Hills to a NCAA Division II National Championship in 2000. Bengard led the team in scoring with 46 points (19 goals, 8 assists), setting a new single season record.
