Results of the 2001 SuperdraftAngeles Galaxy selected Creighton University forward Brian Mullan (9th overall), San Jose State University forward Isaias Bardales Jr. (11th overall), Gonzaga University forward Brian Ching (16th overall), Duke University midfielder Robert Russell (22nd overall), University of Connecticut midfielder Brent Rahim (45th overall), Cal State Dominguez Hills midfielder Alex Bengard (57th overall) and Clemson defender Mike Potempa (69th overall) in the 2001 MLS SuperDraft. A native of Littleton, Colorado, Mullan was Creighton University's leading scorer in 2000 with 18 goals and 13 assists for 49 points. Mullan led the Bluejays to their seventh Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title and ninth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, where they finished as national runners-up to Connecticut. The NSCAA named the 22-year old Mullan a second-team All-American after his senior season. In high school, he was the 1997 Gatorade Colorado Player of the Year and earned 1996 All-America honors from Parade and Umbro. With the 11th overall pick in the first round, the Galaxy selected US Project-40 Player Isaias Bardales Jr. from San Jose State University. The 5-10, 170-pound forward was a member of Sigi Schmid's 1999 Under-20 US National Team, but missed the U-20 World Cup due to a broken fibula in his right leg. The 21-year old finished his second season at San Jose State University after red shirting as a freshman in 1998. Bardales started each of his 39 appearances for the Spartans in 1999 and 2000. The team's second leading scorer (11goals, 3assists) in 2000, he helped SJSU to a 20-1-1 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Galaxy drafted forward Brian Ching with its' 16th overall pick (second round), making him the first Hawaiian player ever to be drafted in MLS history. Los Angeles acquired the 16th pick from the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for defender Zak Ibsen. A graduate of Gonzaga University, Ching finished as the third all-time goal scorer in Gonzaga history with 34 goals. He tallied eight goals and six assists in 2000, good for first-team All-WCC and All-Far West Region honors. In 1999, Ching earned All-West Coast Conference first team honors, registering 13 goals and eight assists. "The most unknown guy in the draft was Brian Ching," commented Schmid, "but he is a player who played at a small college and could become the 'John Stockton' of the MLS."
