Tab Ramos Retires from International Duties

Tab Ramos has decided to retire from internation team duties in order to concentrate more on his family and club team. Ramos has been one of the greatest midfielders that the U.S. has produced. Ramos, who plays for the New York/New Jersey Metrostars, made the decision mostly to be able to spend more time with his family. The Metro is 34 and has been one of the key cogs to the U.S. national team for several years.

Some of the highlights of Ramos' career include being named by World Soccer magazine as one of the "Top 100 Players in the World" in 1991 and helping to move the U.S. national team into the 1998 World Cup with the game-winning goal against Costa Rica in 1997.

The lingering question will be who will replace him. I am happy to report that we have several worthy candidates to Tab's position. I would think that Tab would not take this step unless he felt that the team had some very good candidates for midfielder. I also believe that what we are seeing in MLS, as far as younger players taking strong steps toward first team positions will carry-over into the US national team as well.

The Olympics showed that we have some talented youngsters who are on the threshold of stepping up to their potential on the international stage. Coach Bruce Arena's toughest job will be to cull out the best and see that the become a team.
