The Metrostars started the season with a roar but have quickly quieted down. Alex Comas has been the only consistent scorer for the Metrostars, and even he was held scoreless in last week's match against Columbus.
The midfield is obviously one of the Wizards' strength. Preki, Klein, and Chris Henderson have given the Wizards great strength and experience at midfield. The attacking options that these three give will certainly cause the Metrostars to have to adjust their defense, and thereby cause opportunities for others.
The Metrostars defense had been a point of pride in the early going, but Matthaus will find himself among some young blood come Wednesday. Dooley is out injured, Semioli is questionable, and Ramiro Corrales is off with olympic team duties. Steve Shak has been playing well, but the Metrostars defense is going to have its hands full.
On the opposite defensive third, the Wizards are at full strength. Peter Vermes has been doing a wonderful job. The veteran is leading a strong group of players. The combination of Vermes, Nick Garcia, Matt McKeon, Brandon Prideaux, and Kerry Zavagnin held San Jose scoreless. For the most part, this is a strong, young group of players.
The shutout of course needed some help from the goalkeeper. Tony Meola is right in the middle of one of his hot streaks. Meola has registered three shutouts out of his last four games. The last time he was scored on was their opening game against Chicago. Mike Ammann still has a strong record with MLS and could take it up a notch at any moment.
Although it seems like the kind of game that the Wizads are going to love, the Metrostars seem like a team on the verge of pulling it together. Be sure to keep an eye on the MLS Scoreboard to keep up to speed on the game.
