Mike Michaud: Representing MaineOn November 2, 2004, Mike Michaud was re-elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the second congressional district of Maine. This is Michaud's second term in the U.S. House of Representatives, though he represented the people of Maine for many years in both the Maine legislature and the Maine Senate. But who is Mike Michaud? According to information on Michaud's own website, Michaud was born in 1955 and grew up in the town of Medway, Maine. He went to work at Great Northern Paper Company, like his father and grandfather before him. Michaud first ran for public office in 1980 when he campaigned for a seat in the Maine legislature. His purpose at that time was to help ensure that cleanup efforts were undertaken in the badly polluted Penobscot River. Michaud served seven consecutive terms in the Maine legislature, before being elected to the Maine Senate in 1994. Michaud represented his constituents, helping to assure that Maine jobs and the working class people of his district were protected. The need to address joblessness, loss of manufacturing industry in Maine, and the overtaxed citizens of the State of Maine, should be-have to be-the priorities of Maine's representative. Michaud serves on the Veterans' Affairs Committee, the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and the House Committee on Small Business. These committees are particularly relevant to Michaud's constituents, many of whom are veterans, and many who are facing economic challenges. In addition, many of Maine's former manufacturing employees are now small business owners and entrepreneurs. According to the web site for Maine People's Alliance, the MPA supports Michaud because of his values and his voting record. Michaud consistently votes in line with his public position. Like his constituents, he is independent-minded and hard-working. He is also committed to providing representation to the people of Maine. During his first term in the U.S. House, Michaud proposed legislation that introduced a national version of the Maine Rx plan, called America Rx, opposed any changes in the Social Security program, and voted for the bill which ultimately banned partial-birth abortions. In addition, Michaud supported U.S. withdrawal from NAFTA and supported legislation to help stop the outsourcing of American jobs to foreign countries. During this time of economic challenge, as the number of members of the middle class are shrinking and the number of poor individuals is increasing, it is imperative that we have a representative that is truly in touch with working class families and the issues that are important to them.
