Stephen King: The King of Horrors

No discussion of prominent, talented Mainers--artists, authors, and statesmen--would be complete without including the "King" of horrors, the master of the macabre, Stephen King.

King was born in Portland, Maine, in September, 1947. He grew up with his mother and his older brother, David, and was educated primarily in Maine's public school system. After high school graduation at Lisbon Falls High School in 1966, King attended the University of Maine atOronoo. While attending the University of Maine, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, The Maine Campus. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1970 with a degree in English and a teaching certificate.

While teaching aHampdenen Academy, in the small village oHampdenen, just outside of Bangor, King continued to write and submit his work for publication. Like most authors, he received rejections before was accepted for publication by Doubleday. was King's first significant sale and was the sale that allowed him to pursue his career as a writer.

But it is not just King's writing ability that has made him a prominent citizen of Maine. Together with his wifTabithatha, King has established the Stephen aTabithatha King Foundation, which has provided funding to several charitable projects.

In 2003, while walking along a rural road in Maine, King was struck by a van. He suffered life-threatening injuries and was unable to work for an extended period of time. Luckily for all of us, King recovered from those injuries enough that he has been able to return to his life's passion, the crafting of tales that leave us all a little afraid of the dark.
