Looking to 2002: How Will You Celebrate?

Seems every time I turn on the television or flip through a newspaper, there are more and more announcements about changes in this coming year's New Year celebration. In light of September's tragic events, it is no mystery upcoming occasions have been adjusted quite a bit compared to celebrations in the past.

With everyone "on guard" with added security and certain aspects of entertainment cancelled, what does this mean for future celebrations? Will they all be subject to changes and cancellations? Will we always be looking over our shoulders during times of joyfulness . . . during times of reflection of the previous year as we make resolutions while going into the next?

Note: Personally I haven't decided how to bring in the New Year, nor has my family. Do we join in the festivities around me; throw a party of our own . . . or spend that night in quiet remembrance of those lost and still fighting the battle? I worry we'll be making the wrong decision or appearing selfish when we finally figure out what to do.

How are you bringing in the New Year?

Mainers have many options for celebrating the coming of the New Year both within and outside the borders. Parades and festivals will go on as planned (with some controversy, of course), with added security and few changes in plans. Many have chosen to celebrate "First Night" in Boston, while others choose to visit New Hampshire to join in the festivities. For those who decide to stay in Maine, Portland will be having their celebration as planned.

Some celebrations in Maine:

  • Maine Events Calendar
  • Baptismal: The perfect way to bring in the New Year!
    Boothbay Baptist Church
    Boothbay, Maine 04537

  • Club listings by region: listing of nightclubs, bars and other concerts by region. Call for details.
  • Like to ski? These events combine celebration with your favorite wintertime sport.
  • Country Music New Year's Eve Bash: featuring Jenny Paquette, Cherokee Band, and The Fresh Horse at the Central Maine Civic Center 190 Birch Street Lewiston, ME 04240. (1-207-783-2009)

No matter how you choose to bring in the New Year, the obvious bit of advice I can give is to do it safely. I've noticed during various conversations with my peers many are interested in how to celebrate with more family appeal. Most of those whom I've been talking to bring in the past New Year's with a nonstop night of parties and celebration, whereas this year they are looking for something more home-based. Isn't it funny how events not only change the way people live their daily lives, but also how they view times of celebration?

I am seeing this more on my side of the nation, too, Jenn. Family is all important and parties with others seem to be less important.

I say do what feels right and plan on a better year ahead.
