Moosehead Lake: My First Time

It was summer of 1992, some friends and I decided to plan a trip. Because we were all between the ages of sixteen and nineteen our parents, naturally, had to be involved. After all, they have seen more vacation places in this state and had more means to travel than us!

Our final decision? Moosehead Lake.

Our parents took care of all the accommodations, we just had to worry about packing. They picked the beginning of June, based upon the inn keeper’s recommendation. That way we could avoid traffic through the cities and enjoy uncrowded grounds.

Sounds good!

We loaded up two Ford Explorer-type vehicles with all our luggage, barbeque gear and extra emergency road kits. The last part of our journey includes a long stretch of unpaved road and, in our parent’s experience, it was known that patch kits would be a great necessity.

We traveled about six hours to our greatly anticipated destination. Excitement filled us as we traveled the Golden Road, for we knew we were only moments away. A canopy of lush green surrounded us leaving the air so cool and moist it was almost tangible. If there was not so much beautiful scenery to behold, this would have been a very long and boring ride. Needless to say, I had a difficult time saving film for Moosehead Lake!

The Inn comprised of a main building and several bungalow style structures scattered about a five minute walk apart with paths separating each. Our bungalow was situated with a view of Mount Kineo. The sun was just setting when we arrived, so the dimly lit sky behind the mountain was perfect.

From the porch to the walkway leading to the dock was a covering of thick green grass. I was the first to notice the two canoes parked, beckoning to us. We had no interest in choosing rooms or settling in yet, so down the dock we ran in search of life jackets.

For as far as the eye could see stretched mirror-like water. In never imagined a lake so grand in size to be so calm. I had never been in a canoe before, but the excitement of the entire experience lured me in without a second thought. Before I realized I was about to be floating in who knows how deep water, I was paddling the ore like it was a part of me. It came so naturally that, again, I was not bothered by the fact that we were so far from land that the people looked the size of G.I. Joe men.
