Mail-Order Freshness

© Laura Wurst

Harry and David, brothers of the Roaring Twenties, originally exported their Royal Riviera Pears to grand hotels. But after the depression, faced with bankruptcy, they had to rethink their business plan. Their solution: offering their pears as mail order Christmas gifts. In order to start their mail order business, Harry spent a week in New York while David spent a week in San Francisco distributing gourmet fruit to every VIP they could think of. The result: 400 orders to be received by Christmas. And the rest is history.

When you order fruit from Harry & David, they ship the fruit when it's at its finest ripeness. In fact, the website offers a current harvest report as well as recipe ideas and storage tips. The unfortunate part, however, is that there is no way to track your order to see when it will be delivered.

The most common complaint is the high prices. However, it can also be agreed upon that the quality is unbeatable. And fortunately, if you shop online, there is a Sale and Values Section, offering the same quality at half prices.

My personal favorite was the organic fruit basket. But no matter whom you are buying for, or for what occasion, there is something for everyone.

Laura,

I've gotten their catalogs off and on for years, and always wondered how they got started with a name like that. Thanks for solving the mystery. Just goes to show that every big venture had ...
