Apple cancels Macintosh Application Environment

Apple has announced it will no longer be supporting its Macintosh Application Environment (MAE) a Macintosh emulator for Unix environments, most notably Sun Microsystem's Solaris, and Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX.

MAE emulated non-PowerMac versions of the MacOS up to 7.5.3, and allowed the running of 68K native programs on these machines.

Apple Australia announces build-to-order strategy

Apple Australia has detailed how it will introduce build-to-order into Australia. Basically this reads as a "softly softly" three stage approach.

First Apple Australia will "build-to-replenishment". This means that current specific configurations (those that appear on the price list) will be ordered by Apple Australia through the Build-to-order infrastructure. Next Apple Australia will offer a limited "tailoring" build-to-order option with the full build-to-order options following later in the year as the final stage.

Initally, all these options will be available only to the existing Australian channel, with the East Coast channel suport only worked out so far. Western Australian channel dealers will have to wait while arrangements are made to cater to them. With the introduction of the Australian Apple store late this year or early next year, build-to-order will be extended to customers. Apple Australia is expecting that most customers will follow the American trend of using the Apple Store to find information about products while still ordering them through existing dealers.

Myth 2: Soulblighter

I meant to include this in last weeks news, but it'll go here as easily. Bungie has announced a sequel to Myth. The new game, Myth 2: Soulblighter, was shown off at last weeks E3 and includes many additions to the Myth game engine, including animated 3D models such as working windmills, gates and drawbridges, 4x finer terrain mesh for smooth, incredibly detailed terrain, ambient life like birds chickens and squirrels and finally (from me) new spells and characters.

E3 roundup

Many sites have roundups of E3 from a Mac point of view, the ones I have read so far are the combined Mac Gamer's Ledge/Tikkabik Mac Games/Networkable Mac Games E3 report , Inside Mac Games' E3 Wrap-up and MacWorld's E3 and games article (the one with the most Soulblighter screenshots, although the combined Ledge/Tikkabik/Network report has the most screenshots by far, all of different soon to be released Mac games).

Apple's showing of the iMac was upbeat, and attracted representatives from the top game manufactures, including lukewarm supporters such as Lucas Arts, and those that have yet to release Mac games, like EA. MacSoft lent some weight to Apple's efforts by reporting an increase in profits and new announcing new Mac games, including Civilisation II Gold and Total Annihilation and Deer Hunter. Also shown by them was a late alpha of Unreal (due soon with a near simultaneous Mac/PC release). PlayPak Systems were there showing off their coin-op arcade Macs, telling all the advantages of the Mac as a games platform (not to mention trying to petition companies to make PlayPak enhanced games for them).
