Apple final releases QuickTime 3.0

After a long public beta programme, Apple has finally released Quicktime 3.0. Available now from Apple's Quicktime site is Quicktime 3.0 for both Macintosh and Windows, as well as Quicktime 3.0 Pro. Quicktime 3.0 offers improved features such as support for more non-apple file formats, use of non-apple compression packages to greater reduce file sizes and streamed internet downloads of movies so that they can be viewed as they are downloaded. Quicktime 3.0 is free, but Quicktime 3.0 Pro has to be paid for, it includes some extra editing capabilities (see the articles for more info, especially the Mac Central round up).

In other Quicktime news, Apple has released Quicktime for Java which allows programmers to access the Quicktime Multimedia layer through Java. Quicktime still needs to be installed on those computers, but Java can be used to control the Quicktime features. This means that Quicktime for Java is still, at the moment, a toy for PC's rather then all computers, as Quicktime has only been released for Windows and Macintosh.

Jobs as CEO

With Apple reporting a profit last quarter, and the companies share price almost doubling since last July, it appears that Apple has decided to let Steve Jobs keep the the Apple CEO position. As summed up by Edger S. Woolard in a MSNBC article "Whether we call him interim or not interim is a non-issue with us. We hope he will stay a long time."

Go Steve, show 'em what Apple can do!

From the hopla over the current licensing deals for developers, I think Apple's Trained Monkey in charge of marketing needs a little help with his typewritter.

I have to agree Quicktime is more mature, and it's pretty good. I just hope they don't have a guy who markets Pepsi marketing it though :-)

Here's a test, go to a search engine and search for movies on the net in both quicktime format, and real video format. You'll find that there are by far more quicktime movies.

Now that RealVideo is free up to 5 streams, I don't know who will really want QuickTime for Internet. It's great for CDs though. And movies.
