Claris becomes FileMaker, Inc.
Apple has reorganised its Claris software subsidiary and renamed it FileMaker, Inc. FileMaker, Inc will focus entirely on the FileMaker Pro database software and divest itself of all other programs. Apple will take over the ClarisWorks software suite and sales (as well as development) of all Apple branded software (things like the MacOS, which is currently sold by Claris) as of next week (Feb. 2). There is no solid information available about Claris's other programs, such as Claris Emailer, Home Page, and others. Press Release Other links Apple's sub $1000 PC MacUser UK says that from their information, not only is Apple currently deciding whether or not to build a sub-$1,000 computer, it already has a product in beta stage testing. Yes, hardware has beta stages; it stops companies shipping computers that catch fire. Some people insist in calling it quality assurance/control, whatever. Oh, also, Apple has designed some real doozies in the past as well, so the beta stage is used to weed out bad designs as well (not to mention those that catch fire). MacAddict Magazine had an article about Apple's product testing facilities, all about how Apple bakes, freezes, melts, shakes and otherwise abuses its new hardware to ensure a minimum average time till breakdown of 17,000 hours (this was set up after one of Apple's PowerBook lines had to be recalled because it could catch fire). Anyway, the article quotes an all-in-one, G3-based Power Macintosh. I'm a bit skeptical of this, because last I heard (from places such as MacOS Rumours, and Reality) that Apple's G3 all-in-one system had to go back to the drawing board due to extremely bad opinions of its case design by people asked to test the prototype. I suppose they could have fixed this in the last few months, and the design quoted in the article seems to be different to reports of the prototype case, so maybe MacUser knows what they are talking about. Time will tell. Macintosh Gaming Topic I'm finally getting new editors to cover Mac topics at Suite101. So far I have a Macintosh Gaming Editor already started. Check out his topic at http://www.suite101.com/topics/page.cfm/692. Also, I have someone applying to be the editor of the Macintosh Shareware Topic, so keep an eye out at New Topics page for news of a Macintosh Shareware Topic starting soon. If anyone else would like to be an editor for Suite101, please read this page or contact me at jude@marconi.dialix.com.au if you need more information. Go To Page: 1
