General Reading

Stepwise has an article on the Mach Microkernel. The Mach microkernel is the bases of the Rhapsody operating system, and a few other operating systems such as Mklinux and NeXTstep/OpenStep. A microkernel sits between the operating system and the hardware of a computer. Most multi-platform operating systems are written on top of microkernels, as it allows easier porting to new platforms (linux being the obvious exception to this statement, and Mklinux being the obvious exception to the linux norm). The article is well written, if a bit deep for the casual reader, but all those interested in the underpinnings of Apple's new operating system should give the article a read.

On the topic of Mach Microkernal based operating systems, MacCentral has a Rhapsody Roundup and MacOS Rumours points out that the Mklinux Work In Progress builds now support 603 & 750 (current G3) processor based Power Macs, though people may want to wait for the soon to be released DR3 of Mklinux, which will simplify the install procedures.

Since we're on the topic of MacOS Rumours and Rhapsody, MacOS Rumours has joined forces with RhapsodyOS to provide its Rhapsody coverage, with RhapsodyOS taking over the maintenance of MacOS Rumours' Rhapsody application list and a Rhapsody FAQ.
