Rhapsody Impressions

The German computer magazine, C'T, has a nice long article on Apple's Rhapsody Operating System. It is mostly a review of the developers release (Rhapsody DR1) but also gives some good background so that those that have not been following the news on Rhapsody can also understand what is going on.

This article is mostly a review of the developers release (Rhapsody DR1), but also covers a couple of beta releases that the magazine managed to get a hold of. The article is a bit technical in some places, going into depth on subjects such as the interface, developers tools and applications, Unix integration into the operating system as well as the underlining structure of the operating system. Quite a good read.

MacOSRumors also has readers' impressions of DR1.

For those of you that are starting to drown under all the technical terms used in these articles, ZDNet throws you a lifeline in the form of its Webopedia. This is a site were you can enter a word or phrase and a list of articles is displayed to help you in your search for understanding in the computer world of jargon.

As a final mention of Rhapsody news for this week, The Mac Gamer's Ledge as well as others have announced that ID Software will be porting Quake II to Rhapsody as soon as they have finished producing the Win95 version. For those of you who aren't interested in games you can ignore this. I, on the other hand, am a big fan of first person 3D shooters, and ID software practically made this market (though Bungie helped quite a lot on the Mac). Usually we have to wait for a third party port of ID's games from another company such as Lion Entertainment (now defunct) orMacSoft.
