Rhapsody Demo
Apple gave a demonstration of its new operating system, Rhapsody, at a special meeting of the Bay Area Next Users Group, not to mention anyone else that could squeeze in the door. According to reports, the Blue Box (MacOS computability mode) is not available in this release. Nor is serial drivers (modems) or Quicktime (movies/multimedia). The release also is not fully optimised yet, so runs slower then it could. What is in is: Rhapsody DR1 Gold Master is "in hand" and should be released "in a couple of weeks" for PowerPC (Power Mac 8500, 9500, 8600 and 9600 only, possibly not the 300/350 MHz models) with the Intel version following "a couple of weeks later." It was stressed that this was a developers' release of Rhapsody. This means that the release is to allow developers to start writing applications. It is not for general use, only to allow people to start learning the new operating system, and for developers to test out ideas for applications. Further Information MacIntouch has a series of reports on the meeting from attendants. MacOSRumors also has a report on the meeting. Those looking for programs to run under Rhapsody should check out MacOSRumors Rhapsody Applications List. I wish to apologise for the problems with the links for last week's article. The problem was finally run down late in the week and the links were all fixed. Thankyou for your patience with regards to the problems.
