Gil Amelio interviews
Dr. Gilbert Amelio, former CEO of Apple Computers has given a couple of (long) interviews about his time at Apple. The interviews were to MacAddict Magazine entitled Amelio: The Exit Interview and another to the San Jose Mercury entitled Amelio: Apple is back on track . Both are upbeat assessments of the future of Apple, as well as dealing with what Amelio saw as the most critical issues facing Apple, both now and when he took command. They are a good read for the background to decisions that Apple has taken over the last 17 months. More on Crack-a-Mac After "Starefire's" successful crack, the Hack-a-Mac competition barely got restarted when a buggy beta-version of SiteEdit Pro reverted to a default password after a file was corrupted. A couple of people managed to get into the system using this default password, but not change the home page. The software was disabled while they were cracking the computer (unintentionally, Joakim Jardenberg was working on the problem at the same time as the crack, and disabled SiteEdit when the beta played up). In a more dramatic announcement, "Starfire" appears to have again cracked the Mac (no wonder he wanted the competition to continue after his last hack), this caused the organisers to shut down the computer until at least Thursday. The only information I have is from Macintouch, and they say the crack had nothing to do with either human error or Lasso, the culprit of the first crack. Some links Macintouch's page on Macintosh security issues. I like the last comment on the site, "A Mac running only Webstar(only) is more secure than a Unix webserver. But a piece of granite with an ethernet cable is more secure than either. Interesting email addresses The MacsRule User group is offering people the chance of having the email address myname@macsrule.com. It is basically just an email forwarding service with a cute address. You need to already have an email address to use the service. You just hand out this address as your own and then MacsRule forwards the mail they receive to your own address. This is actually a good idea for those people who regularly change their email addresses, as it alows them to only need to change the forward address at MacsRule, rather then change all the pointers for old addresses to point to the new address.
